Project 13

Rotary Club of Traralgon and MUNA

The Rotary Club of Traralgon has a strong history of delivering and supporting the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) program, going back over a decade.

Whilst the format may have changed over the years from residential camps on Phillip island; to online video submissions (during COVID); to the now one-day approach across the District, many Club members have volunteered their time and support to deliver this valuable Youth program, every year.

What is MUNA?

The Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) is an inter-school debating event where teams of six students form a delegation to represent assigned countries and debate those countries’ positions on set topics. Unlike other UN school programs, Rotary MUNA emphasizes debating resolutions rather than drafting amendments.

MUNA is a powerful extracurricular activity that brings together so much of the VCE curriculum: History, Geography, Social Science, Political Studies, English and Drama, as well as providing opportunities for leadership and teamwork.

Who is MUNA for?

MUNA is for Years 10 and 11 students interested in how the UN General Assembly works. Delegates debate international matters with the goal of promoting peace and mutual understanding, representing the viewpoint of their assigned UN member country. In addition, they gain experience in lobbying, diplomacy, and the voting process within a simulated general assembly.

What is Rotary’s connection?

MUNA is organised by a committee composed of members of Rotary International. Local Rotary clubs can be approached to sponsor a delegation, (team of six students), to attend the half-day MUNA event, so it is completely free for students to participate.

Students and/or their schools should contact their local Rotary club to enquire about sponsorship.

The area covered by Rotary District 9815 extends from Kingston, Bayside, Glen Eira, Monash, Knox, across to the Mornington Peninsula, Frankston, Dandenong, and over to Casey, Cardinia, Bass Coast, Baw Baw, Latrobe, South Gippsland, and through to East Gippsland.

When MUNA was organised by the Traralgon Rotary Club the excellent team running the program led by John Caruana invested their time heavily in planning for each successful event.
